Scottish Borders Self-Catering Holiday Cottages

The Scottish Borders is a wonderful destination for a self-catering holiday and Melrose is a perfect central location from which to enjoy all the magnificent attractions the area has to offer.

When you dream of your perfect holiday cottage in Scotland what do you think of? Perhaps you think of beautiful interiors, comfy beds, clean air and long summer evenings enjoying a barbecue with friends and family. Or maybe you think about local produce, wonderful scenery and sipping a single malt whisky in an armchair by the fire. Or perhaps you just think about free super-fast wifi to keep the children quiet!

At the Eildon Holiday Cottages we aim to provide you with the perfect setting to enjoy your dream holiday in Scotland.

We think you’ll love our holiday cottages which are full of Scottish charm and character. They are built from a converted Georgian farm steading, previously owned by the Duke of Buccleuch and retaining lots of original features.

Set on the edge of Melrose, at the foot of the heather clad Eildon Hills (which turn purple in August when the heather is in flower!) we enjoy the best of both worlds – surrounded by the stunning Scottish countryside whilst only a couple of minutes drive or 15 minutes walk from Melrose town centre with its brilliant shops, restaurants and cafes.

Wheelchair Accessible Holiday Cottages in the Scottish Borders

Setting the benchmark for wheelchair accessible holiday accommodation we have five wheelchair accessible holiday cottages in Melrose, in the heart of the beautiful Scottish Borders. The Eildon Holiday Cottages were formed from the conversion of a Georgian farm steading formerly owned by the Duke of Buccleuch. The cottages have won many awards for accessibility including ‘Winner of the Holiday Care Service award for the best self-catering accommodation in Britain for disabled people’.

The Scottish Borders is a wonderful part of Scotland to visit with its stunning scenery and a wide variety of things to see and do. This is a land of castles and stately homes nestled along the banks of the famous river Tweed. The area has heaps of interesting small towns to explore offering a wonderful array of cultural, culinary, sporting and historical experiences.

Our wheelchair accessible cottages in the Scottish Borders vary in size and layout but all have been graded as Category 1 by Visit Scotland (the tourist board) for wheelchair accessibility which is the highest possible award. We have worked hard to provide the best facilities for our disabled guests at the Eildon Holiday Cottages and continue to work with Visit Scotland to encourage other accommodation providers across Scotland to do the same.

All of the cottages were designed specifically with wheelchair accessibility in mind. All have level access from car parking areas directly outside the front door and there are no ramps or steps anywhere. All doors are 34” wide and most have kick plates.  Kitchens and bathrooms / wet rooms are adapted for wheelchair users and low level windows allow wheelchair users to enjoy the fabulous views from all of the holiday cottages.

We will always try to help in any way we can to make your stay more comfortable and we have a range of disability equipment available to use including fully adjustable electric profiling beds, shower chairs and ceiling tracking or portable hoists. A full list of the available equipment can be viewed here http://www.eildon.co.uk/accessibilty/

Our disabled friendly self-catering accommodation in the Scottish Borders is perfect for wheelchair users travelling alone, families, groups of friends or carers looking for a holiday with their service users. Our website www.eildon.co.uk provides more information on all our holiday cottages and the surrounding area.

Borders Railway access to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival

The world famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival runs from 5th – 29thAugust 2016 and there’s a vast range of wonderful experiences on offer. Staying in Edinburgh during this period can be very expensive though, accommodation gets booked up very quickly leaving little choice. Driving in is not much fun either with increased road traffic and lack of parking spaces when you get there.

But now there is another option; you can stay in the beautiful Scottish Borders and use the new railway line to access the city centre in under an hour. This means you can now enjoy the space and tranquillity of staying at the Eildon Holiday Cottages in Melrose but still be able to pop in to the city to see any of the fringe festival events that take your fancy.  The Eildon Holiday Cottages are less than 3 miles from Tweedbank Railway Station and the ideal location for enjoying the best of both worlds. Call or book online today, an exciting summer holiday awaits!

N.b. Our accommodation is suitable for everyone including disabled guests using wheelchairs and the Borders Railway trains are also wheelchair accessible.

Christmas and New Year in the Scottish Borders

Christmas and New Year (called Hogmanay in Scotland) is a very special time to visit Scotland and the Eildon Holiday Cottages in Melrose. It’s a very traditional time where friends and families take time out of their hectic lives to gather round and celebrate. The days are short but you can often enjoy wonderful wintry landscapes covered by stunning icy frosts or blanketed in fluffy snow – perfect for a riverside stroll or a hike up a mountain followed by a festive mug of mulled wine back in the comfort of your cosy holiday cottage. Melrose has two butchers, two bakers, a delicatessen and a fruit and veg shop all selling wonderful local produce to make your perfect Christmas lunch.
Hogmanay sees a traditional street party in Melrose where you can join in with a gathering of people to see in the New Year. Burts Hotel is a great place to go for a gala dinner then there’s Scottish bagpipe music, ceilidh dancing and a firework display out in the street to keep you entertained into the wee hours.
We have limited availability left for Christmas and New Year 2015 so to book call us on 01896 823258 or visit www.eildon.co.uk

Dog Friendly Holiday Cottages in the Scottish Borders

Our pet friendly holiday cottages in Melrose in the heart of the beautiful Scottish Borders are a dog walker’s paradise. Set amidst beautiful rolling farmland, the cottages are surrounded by open countryside with superb walking right on the doorstep. There are lots of local footpaths accessed directly from the cottages including the St Cuthbert’s Way which runs past the cottages and over the Eildon Hills from which there are stunning views across the Tweed valley and down to the English border 40 miles away. The river Tweed is less than a mile away and is a great place to take the dog for a swim on a hot summer’s day. The annual two day Championship Dog show at the local show ground in mid June is a highlight in the canine calendar and the Eildon Holiday Cottages are an ideal base whether you are showing dogs or just going along for a fun day out.

Pets welcome

Well behaved dogs are very welcome to stay in our pet friendly holiday cottages in the Scottish Borders and we think they will enjoy their holiday here as much as their human companions (possibly even more!). There is even a dedicated doggie shower (ok it’s a hosepipe!) which is handy after a muddy walk in the surrounding countryside or even just for a cool down on a hot summer’s day.

Borders Book Festival in Melrose

The 2014 Borders Book Festival will take place between Thursday 12th June and Sunday 15th June and offers an exciting and varied line-up. Harmony Gardens in Melrose once again hosts the event which is now in its eleventh year. The event continues to go from strength to strength which is reflected in the star studded programme. Jennifer Saunders is sure to be a favourite must-see this year but the line-up has been designed to offer something for everyone to suit all tastes and interests.  Don’t miss the chance to taste some excellent local beer from the Scottish Borders Brewery and fantastic Over-Langshaw ice cream made only a few miles away. Eildon Holiday Cottages are only half a mile away and provide the perfect place to stay for the festival.

Scottish Borders Eco Friendly Holiday accommodation

At the Eildon Holiday Cottages we have now been heating our six cottages with biomass fuel for nearly two years. Biomass is basically any fuel that comes from organic plant matter. We have installed a 65 KW HDG boiler that is capable of burning any type of biomass but we have it set up to burn compressed wood pellets. This is a carbon neutral sustainable fuel sourced from virgin timber which is replanted as soon as any trees are cut down. It also provides jobs in the forestry industry in Scotland which is an important rural employer.

The biomass boiler has been set up as a mini district heating scheme which provides heating and hot water for six holiday cottages and the owner’s accommodation in the neighbouring farmhouse. This is far more energy efficient than having individual boilers in each property. Biomass fuel is also less expensive to buy than fossil alternatives such as kerosene oil which allows us to heat our holiday cottages more effectively during the colder winter months. Eco- conscious guests can therefore rest assured that they are minimising their carbon footprint during their holiday in the Scottish Borders.

Getting Married in Melrose in the Scottish Borders

The Scottish Borders offers a huge variety of superb wedding venues including grand stately homes like Abbotsford House just outside Melrose, dramatic historic buildings like Neidpath Castle at Peebles and lovely hotel venues such as The Townhouse in Melrose and the Roxburgh Hotel near Kelso.

When planning a wedding, The Kelso Wedding Show (April) and The Borders Wedding Show (October) at the Border Union Showground are well worth a visit with lots of local suppliers promoting their services. Having a professional photographer to capture your day and create your wedding album is extremely important and award winning local photographer, Alex Martin (www.borders-photographer.co.uk), says “it’s a great opportunity to get inspiration for planning your perfect wedding day and to meet the best local suppliers”.

Eildon Holiday Cottages are perfectly located for many of the Scottish Borders wedding venues and can accommodate up to 27 people in six cottages.

Things to do in Melrose

Melrose is the most attractive (not biased at all!) town in the Scottish Borders and regularly wins Scotland in Bloom awards for the beautiful display of flowers throughout the summer months. The town centre is very compact with only two streets but there is a fantastic variety of small independent shops rarely seen on the high street these days. There are two butchers, two bakeries, a greengrocer, a delicatessen and a wine shop making it an ideal place to pick up those special ingredients for preparing a feast back at your holiday cottage.

If you would rather eat out then there are several excellent eateries in the town including Burts Hotel which won Scotland’s Dining Pub of the Year in 2012 and The Townhouse, run by the same family, is also very good. Monte Casino is great for Italian food and Marmions Brasserie is very popular as well. The Station Hotel has been recommended by our guests, as has the Kings Arms which often runs specials such as steak night and curry night.

For those wanting to eat in the comfort of their holiday cottage but looking for a night off cooking, the town is also well-off for takeaways. The best takeaway fish and chips are at the Station Hotel but there is also a takeaway that serves a large menu including kebabs, pizzas, and pakora as well as fish and the other usual chip shop foods. There is an Indian as well and the Italian restaurant has an excellent takeaway menu.

During the day there are several excellent cafes around the town so you will never need to be hungry or thirsty!

If you are looking to do some shopping in between meals there are several lovely clothes shops, a jewellers, an interior design shop, an antiques shop and a florist.

There are some great places to visit in town too including, the woollen mill, the famous Melrose Abbey where Robert De Bruce’s heart is buried, Harmony Gardens and some beautiful walks along the river Tweed.

With several big events in the town including the Borders Book Festival, the Melrose 7’s, the Melrose Festival, the Scottish Bagpipe Championships and Hogmanay fireworks and street celebrations there is a lot going on in our wee town to make a perfect Scottish holiday destination.
